Route Name:
Telecom Tower
Distance: 55.2 km
Route Description: A stalwart of the Whyalla
Cycling Club road season, used primarily for Club Championships,
a fast flat route which starts from the usual club gates and
heads out North onto the Lincoln Highway, after approx 8km the
riders turn right onto Pt Bonython Rd, after a typically fast
tailwind 9km section, the riders round Flood Bend, usually
hitting a strong head wind and hit a few very small rises.
The riders then turn left onto Fitzgerald Bay Rd and start the
major climb up Telecom Tower Hill, a 6% gradient, 2km climb,
with the turnaround point at the summit, its then a fast,
typically tail wind ride back along the same route. Once
turning back onto the Lincoln Highway the riders usually meet a
wind change with a strong head wind for the final 6km stretch.
After rounding the final bend past the train line, the sprint
opens up with a long 1km open stretch, perfect for the sprinters
to sit on the wheel of the overeager and slingshot to the line
at the old Traklok building.
