Young
wins Iron Knob Road Handicap in close finish
29.07.08
The number of both junior and senior riders were down on Saturday as
many were competing in Port Pirie; the small field that raced locally
along the Iron Knob Road were faced with a strong head wind for the
return to the line.
Aaron Shore was the first rider off in the senior 50km handicap with
Peter Werner and Gary Anderson starting 15 minutes later and scratch
riders Darren Anderson, Ben Young and Wil Symons off at 21 minutes.
The favourable tail wind and an average speed of 39km/hr on way out to
the turn around meant that D Anderson, Young and Symons made up the six
minute gap to Werner and G Anderson as they turned to head back to
Whyalla.
Shore still held an eight and a half minute lead as he reached the turn
around but had his work cut out to hold it to the line with the group of
five steadily reeling him in.
He was finally caught on the run down to the model aero club but
couldn’t match pace to stay with the bunch and slipped off the back.
D Anderson lifted the pace up the last incline before the finish at
Fryers Cutting and split pack as Symons and Young went with him but G
Anderson and Werner lost contact with them.
D Anderson, Young and Symons were waiting to see who would make the
first move as they approached the line with D Anderson the first to go
but Young was ready and responded immediately.
It was a very close finish with Young just ahead of D Anderson as they
crossed the line followed a second later by Symons and a further 30
seconds later was G Anderson and Warner.
In the junior 30km race Sam Campbell rode out 15kms before turning and
heading back to the finish.
He was joined at the turnaround by Novice rider Alex Bradbury and they
completed the last 15kms together. |
