Whyalla cyclists attended the Central Districts Junior Cycling Tour held
over three days and five stages.
Day one consisted of a time trial, day two included two road
races and day three was a road race followed by a criterium race.
Whyalla was well represented by six riders Jai Sutton, Dylan Starkey and
Sam Campbell riding under 13, Tim Fulton riding under 15 males, Nicole
Goldring and Rhyse Carpenter both riding under 17 female and male
respectively.
Under 13 boys were off first on a five kilometre time trial with Jai
Sutton taking the fastest time followed by Dylan Starkey in third and
Sam Campbell coming home in seventh place.
Under 15 was run over a 10km course and was well won by Tim Fulton.
Under 17 women represented by Nicole Goldring over 10km was very well
ridden by a fast finishing Nicole to finish in sixth place.
Under 17 male ridden by Rhyse Carpenter in a very large field came home
in 25th place, a very good effort considering this field is full of
national and state road champions.
Day two, stage two again began with the under 13 run in very cold
and hilly conditions.
This stage was over 22km and again was won by Jai Sutton followed by
Dylan Starkey in third and Sam Campbell in eighth place.
Under 15 males was also run over 22km with Tim Fulton coming home in
second place, caught napping in the closing stages of the race.
Under 17 women was also over 22km.
Nicole once again rode very well to finish in sixth place.
The under 17 males race was run over 32km in which Rhyse Carpenter rode
a very courageous race to finish in 24th place.
Day two, stage three
Under 13 Dylan Starkey had to chase the lead rider alone in this race to
finish second after Jai Sutton suffered mechanical problems to limp home
in third place followed by Sam Campbell in eighth place.
This stage was run over 26km.
Under 15 male Tim Fulton rode this race with some purpose to make sure
he wasn’t going to be caught again and won this stage quiet
convincingly.
Under 17 women again represented by Nicole Goldring finishing in sixth
place but made small steps to catch the main bunch.
Under 17 male Rhyse Carpenter road this 49km course in very difficult
conditions with a stiff breeze and hills that some goats wouldn’t
attempt.
Rhyse improved in this race to come home in 22nd place.
Day three, stage four
Under 13 Jai Sutton rode this race with a point to prove after the day
before’s disappointment and finished strong to win the stage followed by
Dylan Starkey in third and Sam Campbell eighth.
Under 15 male race was again won by Tim Fulton even after getting the
wrong direction from a corner marshal.
Under 17 female Nicole Goldring rode in this race and was very
disappointed at the finish after some mix up on the course causing her
to ride several more kilometres than she had to.
Under 17 male, Rhyse improved in this race to finish in 21st place
Day three, stage five Criterium
Under 13 was run in a very hotly contested race with the two riders Jai
and Dylan finishing in second and third place followed by Sam Campbell
in eighth
Under 15 male was also a very close race with Tim Fulton making a small
error on the last few laps to finish second.
Under 17 women saw Nicole Goldring finally showed faith in her ability
to ride a faultless race to finish in fourth place.
Under 17 male was always going to be a difficult race for Rhyse as the
cream really rose to the top, and he finished in the back markers.
With all the stages completed Whyalla faired very well with under 13
Dylan Starkey finishing second overall and Jai Sutton in third
Under15 male Tim Fulton had finished first overall in his age group
which was a terrific effort.
In fact all riders and coaches should be very happy with the results of
their efforts.
Most of the riders had never experienced courses and conditions like
that before. |
