Cycling Track Season Opens
19.10.08
Whyalla Cycling club's track season opened on Friday night with the
warm, still night leading to some fast times being posted and also the
start of the McLeods Point Series.
Tim Fulton, Ryan Ware, Rhyse Carpenter and Nicole Goldring stepped up
from last year's Junior ranks to join the Seniors for this season and
threw down a challenge to Darren Anderson and Paul Berkett. Fulton
won the opening 15 lap scratch race from Berkett, Carpenter, Anderson,
Ware and Goldring which saw him start from the scratch position for the
two lap handicap. He struggled to reel in Berkett (15m), Carpenter
(20m), Anderson (25m), Ware (40m) and Goldring (55m) over the distance
while Anderson made the most of his handicap to take out the event
followed by Ware, Carpenter, Goldring, Fulton and Berkett. Fulton
won the closing 20 lap scratch race ahead of Carpenter, Ware, Anderson
and Goldring to finish the evening one point in front of Carpenter (11
points) with Anderson and Ware both on 10 points, Berkett (eight) and
Goldring (six).
Gary Carpenter made his move from high up on the bank as they got the
final lap bell in the Vets 10 lap scratch race to take the lead which he
held to the line with Kelvin Rohrlach second and Adrian Wilson third.
Rohrlach (40 metres) worked hard in the two lap handicap to hold onto
his lead for the whole race while Carpenter (0 metres) just got onto the
back of Wilson (20 metres) as they began the last lap with Wilson
holding him off to take out second place. At the end of the
evening there were only three points separating these riders with
Rohrlach on 12 points, Wilson (11) and Carpenter (nine). It would
be good to see more riders in this group in the coming weeks to give
these three riders more competition.
Junior Dylan Fewster, in his first season showed a lot of potential and
was strong competition for Dylan Starkey, Sam Campbell, Liza Wakeling
and Jessica Shore in Junior A Grade. Starkey broke away from the
other four riders with four laps to go in the 10 lap scratch race to
cross the line half a lap in front of Fewster, Campbell, Wakeling and
Shore. In the two lap handicap the riders had closed the gaps to
be together three quarters of a lap from the finish with Starkey first
to the line ahead of Wakeling, Fewster, Campbell and Shore.
Fewster finished the night just ahead of Starkey on points followed by
Campbell, Wakeling and Shore.
It was a battle between brothers Justin and Ethan Burke in the sprint
for the line in the Junior B Grade six lap scratch race with Ethan first
to the line ahead of Justin and Tegan Wood third. In the two lap
handicap Wood (55 metres) held her lead for the whole race while the
Burke brothers were side by side as they began the final lap with Ethan
(0 metres) finishing in second place and Justin (10 metres) third.
At the end of the evening Justin and Ethan were on equal points with
wood two points behind.
BMX riders Natalie and Jacob Anderson joined with Scott Litchfield in a
round of handicap races with Scott completing two laps and Natalie and
Jacob one lap.
All riders showed an improvement in pace from last year and shared the
placings over the course of the night. |
