Congratulations to Rhyse Carpenter
02.02.09
Congratulations to Rhyse Carpenter who was recently chosen to be a member of the State Under 19 Men's track team.  We wish Rhyse all the best as he travels to Adelaide this week to compete in the National Track Championships which will be held at the Adelaide Superdrome from Feb 3 to 8.

Friday's hot weather meant racing started an hour later at 7.30pm and a shorter program was put in place with race distances adjusted.  The upside to the hot conditions was a fast track with a good pace being set from the start of the opening race which was the Senior A Grade 12 lap scratch race.  Ben Young lifted the pace further about half way through the race with Nicole Goldring dropping about a bike length off the back of the bunch with the riders dropping into this space as they finished their turn at the front.  Tim Fulton led Rhyse Carpenter, Young, Ryan Ware and Goldring into the final lap with Carpenter going up high on the bank and as they came into the back straight Fulton moved up slightly to keep him there.  Young from third wheel, moved into this gap underneath Fulton and Carpenter to take the lead which he held to the line to take out the event from Carpenter with Ware just catching Fulton on the line for third and Goldring fifth.

Senior B Grade set a steady pace in their eight lap scratch race with Kelvin Rohrlach just slightly off the back for the last three laps but maintaining the same pace as the rest.  Keith Gibbons led the bunch into the last lap and held them off to cross the line ahead of Peter Werner, Dylan Starkey, Adrian Wilson, Rohrlach and Darryl Fulton.

Bailey Kesby led Corey Gibbons and Chloe Hellowell into the final lap of the Junior B Grade 4 lap scratch race.  Gibbons slowly made his way around Kesby to take the lead as they came down the back straight and increased it to 15 metres as he crossed the line while Hellowell was third.

In the Junior A Grade 5 lap scratch race it was Sam Campbell who was in front as they got the last lap bell with Jessica Shore putting in a strong lap to be side by side with Campbell as they came down the straight to the line.  Campbell just held her off to have his wheel in front as they crossed the line in a very tight finish.

BMX rider Hannah Wilson was timed for her one lap sprint recording a time of 1min 40.27sec in the first lap and 1 min 36.34 in the second and was joined by Baden Wilsdon for a handicap race for her final event.  Hannah led until they came down the straight to the line when Baden came underneath to take the lead and win the event.

The Seniors and Junior A then combined for an Olympic Pursuit with the rider on the front of each team pulling out after completing one lap with the team on the front straight taking it out by a few centimeters.

The final event of the evening was a Senior 15 lap scratch race which saw T Fulton make a break on the first lap which split the field as Starkey, Goldring, Young, Carpenter and Ware chased him down.  Werner and Gibbons slowly reeled in the lead group to be back with them four laps later.  Gibbons made an attack off the front and Werner sprinted after him but the rest of the pack soon reeled them in then Fulton made his attack off the front with Carpenter on his wheel and the rest of the pack further behind.  Ware made his move to try to bridge the gap in the last two laps and although he put in a strong sprint in the final lap closing the gap considerably Fulton's lead was too great and he wasn't able to catch him before the line.
