Cyclists Take Part in Adelaide Tour
09.02.09
Quite
a few members of the Whyalla Cycling Club travelled to Adelaide in
the last week of January to take part in the Tour Down Under
Challenge Ride. It covered the same route as stage four, Burnside to
Angaston, with riders completing a distance of either 32kms, 97kms
or 155kms.
While in Adelaide, Jai Sutton and
Paul Berkett participated in the TDU Norwood Parade Criteriums with
Sutton coming first in junior B grade and Berkett second in senior D
grade.
Berkett and Malcolm Clasohm also
took part in the Masters and Vets Series of races with Clasohm
finishing fourth in the B grade 62km road race at Victor Harbor and
Berkett tenth in his grade.
The time trial was held at Willunga
and saw Clasohm third fastest in the 55 to 60years age group and
Berkett fourth in the 40 to 44 years group, while Clasohm came fifth
in the veterans A grade criterium at Regency Park and Berkett first
in the B grade race.
Friday night's local racing was
postponed for an hour due to the hot weather before it got under way
with the senior A grade 12 lap scratch race. The riders stayed
together for the whole race although Tim Fulton attacked with five
laps to go. However the others were ready and responded
immediately and went with him. It was a close sprint finish
between the four riders with Ben Young and T Fulton side by side as
they came to the line and Ryan Ware and Darren Anderson not far
behind.
T Fulton managed to get his wheel in front as they crossed the line
to take out the event by a mere tyre width to Young while Anderson
was third and Ware fourth.
Kelvin Rohrlach was at the front
with five laps to go in the vet's eight-lap scratch race and he used
this opportunity to lift the pace which split the group when Hayden
Gill dropped off the back of the bunch. Nick Hellowell led
Adrian Wilson, Darryl Fulton, Rohrlach and Gill into the last lap
and held off the other riders to take out the event from Wilson,
Rohrlach, D Fulton and Gill.
Keith
Gibbons and Peter Werner have moved up from the vets to senior B
grade and threw down the challenge to Jai Sutton, Dylan Starkey and
Jarrod Hamilton from the start of the 10-lap scratch race. The
pace lifted after six laps and Hamilton found himself just losing
contact with the bunch but was on the back the next lap. Starkey
decided to make his move with two laps to go and Werner, Gibbons,
Sutton went with him. Gibbons poured on the power for the
final lap and took the lead to be first to the line ahead of Werner,
Sutton, Starkey and Hamilton.
In the
junior A grade eight-lap scratch race Jessica Shore and Sam Campbell
led Liza and Charlotte Wakeling on the last lap bell. In a strong
lap by all riders the lead changed and it was L Wakeling who was
first to the line followed by Campbell, C Wakeling and Shore.
Novices Dana
Prater, Corey Gibbons and Bailey Kesby practiced their turn taking
in their four-lap scratch race. Prater made a move around C Gibbons
on the bell to take the lead which she held until the end while
Kesby was third. BMX riders Jasmine Ledington and Hannah Wilson
enjoyed a series of handicap races.
With the
hot, still night making it ideal for fast times in a flying 200m
sprint the riders requested this event be held. The three fastest
senior times recorded by B Young 12.39 seconds, T Fulton 12.78 and K
Gibbons 12.96 while in the junior grades it was C Wakeling 16.07
seconds, S Campbell 16.15 and L Wakeling 16.24.
