Lap of Honour for Juniors
23.02.09
The Whyalla Cycling Club's racing program on Friday night began with a lap of honour for the seven junior cyclists who competed in the State titles in Adelaide last weekend.

The improved form of some of the riders showed with a fast pace set from the start of the senior A grade 15 lap heart starter with the bunch split from early in the race.  Rhyse Carpenter and Darren Anderson were almost side by side as they began the last lap with Ben Young not far behind however it was Young who made his move as they came down the back straight and took the lead.  He held off the other two riders to be first to the line followed by R Carpenter, Anderson, Clasohm, Ware and Goldring.

The Masters were all together after eight laps of their 10 lap heart starter when Darryl Fulton decided to make his move and broke away from the bunch to gain a 40m lead as they got the final lap bell.  Adrian Wilson took off after him but left his run a bit too late with Fulton having created a big enough gap to hold off the sprintrs to the line and take out the event from Wilson, Kelvin Rohrlach and Gary Carpenter.

Senior B grade maintained their steady pace from the beginning of the 15 lap scratch race with Jai Sutton using his turn at the front with eight laps to go to lift the pace further.  Jarrod Hamilton lost contact off the back of the bunch in the next lap followed shortly after by Pierce Sutton however the two riders could not bridge the gap back to the group.  It was Keith Gibbons who led J Sutton, Peter Werner and Dylan Starkey into the last lap and although J Sutton gave it his all and at one point was level with Gibbons he was not quite strong enough to take the lead.  K Gibbons finished first followed by J Sutton, Werner and Starkey.

In the junior A grade 12 lap scratch race Sam Campbell was in front as they began the last lap and stretched his lead out to 20m over Jessica Shore, Liza Wakeling and Charlotte Wakeling.  He went on to take out the event with L Wakeling second, C Wakeling third and Shore fourth.

It was a sedate pace in the junior C grade four lap scratch race until the bell rang and that was all Corey Gibbons needed to begin his sprint and Jacob Hughes was ready and went after him, catching him with half a lap to go.  They raced hard to the finish but it was C Gibbons who had his wheel in front as they crossed the line while Bailey Kesby was third just ahead of Ryan Bodinner.

In the junior B grade four lap scratch race Justin Burke made his move just over half way through the race and had a handy 15m lead over Tegan Wood and Dana Prater which he kept to cross the line ahead of Prater and Wood.

Scott Litchfield had a timed one lap sprint which he completed in 53.14 seconds.

BMX rider Jasmine Ledington (0m) proved to be too strong for Hannah Wilson (40m) in their 1 lap handicap.

There was some excitement in the senior A grade three lap handicap as the riders came around the last bend before the line after the three back markers Anderson (20m), R Carpenter (10m) and Young (0m) had taken the lead from Clasohm (30m), Ware (80m) and Goldring (100m).  R Carpenter moved up from the bottom of the track to hold Anderson up high and Young saw his opportunity to go under them to begin his sprint.  Carpenter must have sensed Young's presence and decided to drop back down to close the gap off to Young but did not realise Young had just started to move under him.  Young was able to drop down onto the duckboard and the riders avoided a clash with Carpenter finishing first from Anderson, Young, Ware, Clasohm and Goldring.
