Campbell's Clean Sweep
20.03.09

Sam
Campbell took out all Junior A grade events in what was another good
night weather wise for racing at the Velodrome on Friday night.
As the Junior A grade riders began their last lap of the 10-lap
scratch race, Sam Campbell had a 10-metre lead with Liza Wakeling
chasing him down and Charlotte Wakeling on her wheel. C.
Wakeling made her move around the outside of her sister as they came
around the last bend, but wasn't able to reel in Campbell before the
line and finished second ahead of L. Wakeling and Jessica Shore.
Campbell (0m)
also took out the 2-lap handicap, but it was a tight contest for
second as the other three riders crossed the finish together. It was
C. Wakeling whose wheel was just in front of L. Wakeling and Shore
on the line. L. Wakeling was first out in the elimination
followed by Shore leaving the final sprint between C. Wakeling and
Campbell, with Campbell taking it out by the smallest of margins.
In Junior B grade Dana Prater and
Justin Burke ended the night on equal points after Burke won his
first event, a 6-lap scratch race. Prater (25m) held onto the lead
in the first 2-lap handicap to finish ahead of Burke (0m), while
Burke (0m) was able to catch her in the second after her handicap
was brought back to 20 metres.
Newcomer Connor Margaritis had a
good first night of racing throwing down the challenge to the Junior
C grade riders and will be one to watch next season. He took out the
4-lap scratch race and 2 lap handicap from Corey Gibbons and Bailey
Kesby, while Gibbons won the second 2-lap handicap and 4-lap scratch
race with Margaritis second and Kesby third.
In the Masters 12-lap scratch race
Kelvin Rohrlach held a 15-metre lead with three laps to go and
maintained it until Peter Werner and Adrian Wilson lifted the pace
as they got the bell, while Gary Carpenter wasn't able to go with
them. Werner and Wilson gradually reeled in Rohrlach over the
final lap passing him and crossing the line in this order with G.
Carpenter fourth.
G. Carpenter (10m) had a handy
10-metre advantage over Rohrlach (20m), Wilson (30m) and Werner (0m)
as they began their last lap of the 3-lap handicap, but he wasn't
able to hold the others off to the end and it was Wilson who took
out the event from Rohrlach, Carpenter and Werner.
A grader Ben Young's improved form
saw him take out the opening event, a 15-lap heart starter, holding
off Rhyse Carpenter as they came to the finish with Malcolm Clasohm
third ahead of Darren Anderson and Ryan Ware. Clasohm off 45m
made the most of his handicap in the 3 lap handicap race to catch
Ware (60m) and hold off the rest of the field to finish first from
Young (0m), R. Carpenter (15m), Anderson (30m) and Ware.
In their final event of the night, a
combined senior 50-lap scratch race, the field stayed together until
just over half way through when the pace lifted and Peter Werner and
Adrian Wilson dropped off the back with the gap increasing with each
lap. Anderson attacked with two laps to go, however the other riders
were ready and all responded immediately so were together as they
began the final lap. It was Young who was the first to the
line followed by Clasohm, R. Carpenter, Ware, Anderson, Wilson and
Werner.
Next week the cyclists will be
contesting the club championships, which are being held over Friday
and Saturday nights starting at 6.30pm with many of the grades too
close to call.
