Cycling Season Wraps Up
03.04.09

Whyalla Cycling Club's track
season finished on Friday night with the annual Wheel race and
presentations for the final round of the McLeods Point series and
for the overall Point Series winner for each grade. Senior A
grade began the evening with a 12-lap scratch race and it was Ryan
Ware who led Rhyse Carpenter and Ben Young as they got the last lap
bell. Carpenter, with Young on his wheel made his move around
the outside of Ware as they came down the back straight with
Carpenter just holding off Young and Ware as they crossed the line.
Jai Sutton and Dylan Starkey led Pierce Sutton and Peter Werner into
the final lap of the Senior B grade 12-lap scratch race with J.
Sutton loosing the lead to Starkey in the last few metres after a
strong lap with Werner third and P. Sutton fourth.
On the bell in the Masters 12-lap scratch race Kelvin Rohrlach was a
bike length ahead of Adrian Wilson with Gary Carpenter and Darryl
Fulton a further 20 metres behind and although Wilson tried to reel
in Rohrlach, he had too big a lead and the riders finished in these
positions.
At the beginning of the final lap of the Junior A grade 10-lap
scratch race Sam Campbell was in the lead with Liza and Charlotte
Wakeling side-by-side and right on his wheel and Jessica Shore not
far behind. It was a three way tussle to the line but Campbell
held off Liza and Charlotte to take out the event while Shore was
fourth.
Justin Burke made his move after two laps of the Junior B grade
six-lap scratch race gaining a handy lead before Dana Prater started
to chase him down but Tegan Wood wasn't able to go with her.
Although she closed the gap Prater wasn't able to catch him before
the line and Burke was first to the line ahead of Prater and Wood.
The Junior C Grade riders bunched up on the bell of their 4 lap
scratch race with Jacob Hughes and Corey Gibbons side by side for
the whole of the last lap, but Hughes just had his wheel in front as
they crossed the line with Connor Margaritis third and Bailey Kesby
fourth.
In the Junior D grade four-lap scratch race Ryan Bodinner took off
on the bell followed by Chloe Hellowell and Chris Margaritis, but
Bodinner was too strong and took out the event from Hellowell and C.
Margaritis.
BMX riders Jasmine Ledington and Sebastian Hubner showed improved
skills and confidence in their handicap races with Scott Litchfield
working hard off scratch to chase them down.
Young (0m) and Carpenter (10m) worked hard together almost from the
start of the Senior six-lap wheel race to reel in the six riders in
front of them catching Ware (100m) half way through. With a
group of five riders working in front to hold off these three riders
it was going to be a challenge to reel them all in in the remaining
three laps. Ware hit the front of the chase pack with a lap
and a half to go and selflessly put in a very strong turn to close
down the gap. Young began his move through the lead group as
he came around the final bend hitting the front in the last 25metres
and taking out the event from Wilson (160m), P. Sutton (140m), R.
Carpenter, Ware, G. Carpenter (170m), Fulton (180m) and Shore
(210m).
C. Wakeling (120m) held off a fast approaching Starkey (0m) in the
Junior four-lap wheel race to finish first ahead of Starkey,
Campbell (80m), J. Sutton (5m), L. Wakeling (110m), Prater (200m),
Burke (150m) and Wood (190m).
Ryan Bodinner (60m) put in a strong ride in the 24"bikes three-lap
wheel race to be first from Connor (40m), Kesby (50m), Hellowell
(100m), Chris (110m), Hughes (0m) and Gibbons (5m).FULL RACE RESULTS
