Wilsdon Wins Sprint
20.06.09

The rain on Saturday morning looked to make it a wet race for the cyclists, but it had cleared and the roads dried before the start of racing.

Hayden Gill and Bob Monaghan were the first off in the Senior 60km handicap out along the Iron Knob Road followed 19 minutes later by Peter Werner, Darryl Fulton and Paul Waring.  This second group had all split just after they turned off the mad mile onto the Iron Knob Road with Werner out front and slowly pulling away from Fulton and Waring further back.

Matt Daum, Wil Symons, Ryan Ware, Tim Fulton, Adrian Wilson and Alex Foord were off 26 minutes while Paul Berkett, Malcolm Clasohm and Leighton Wilsdon started two minutes later.  Daum retired early in the race leaving the other five in his group to try to hold off the scratch riders, but these two groups joined before the turn around although Ware and Foord lost contact off the back.

Monaghan and Gill were the first to the turn around by just under a minute followed by the six combined scratch and chopping block riders.  T Fulton tried to stay with this group on the return but the strong tail wind and his restricted gearing made it difficult and he dropped off the back and they pulled away.  Waring punctured just before the turn around and D Fulton retired just after.  Wilsdon out sprinted Clasohm, Berkett, Symons and Wilson to the line to also finish in the fastest time.

Heather Cutting, off 0 minutes, showed improved form in the Junior 10krn handicap along the Iron Knob road to keep her advantage almost to the end.  Back markers Connor Margaritis (7min 15sec) and Jacob Hughes (8min 30 sec) had their work cut out to reel in the rest of the field and although Jacob didn't quite catch Connor he had made up 49 seconds at the finish.  Corey Gibbons put in a strong ride to close the six minute gap to Heather to two minutes as she crossed the line.  Chris Margaritis and Chloe Hollowell both started off at two minutes, but Margaritis couldn't match her pace as she set out to reel in Heather with the handicapper sure to adjust her start position next week.  Chloe was first to reach the finish followed soon after by Heather, Connor, Jacob, Corey and Chris with Jacob taking out the fastest time..
