Rainy Weather Steers Off Cyclists
20.11.09
Racing
at the velodrome on Friday night was halted half way through the
third round of events as a few spots of rain started to fall, making
the track unsafe. However it wasn't long before cyclists and
spectators were scurrying for cover, with the rest of the program
cancelled.
This week saw a return to
cycling for Scott Ware and Ben Gloede, after a break of some years
with both competing in senior B grade. With some improved fitness
Ware could easily move up to A grade in the coming weeks.
Senior A grade were in top
form from the beginning of the night. Ben Young attacked five laps
into the opening event, a 15 lap heart starter, with Tim Fulton
responding immediately to get back onto his wheel. Rhyse Carpenter
led Daniel Anderson and Ryan Ware over the 25m gap to bring them all
back together. This was until they slowed with a lap and a half to
go, then moved up on the bank waiting for someone to make the first
move. Anderson used the advantage of the bank to dive underneath
the others trying to get a break as they got the bell. But the rest
were ready and went with Anderson, coming around the final bank in a
line and up the slope. Those on the outside had to travel the
furthest, but stayed level with the rider beside them to make a
bunch sprint for the line and a close finish. It was Young who took
out the event from Carpenter, Fulton, R Ware and Anderson.
The senior B grade stayed
together for the whole 12 laps, spreading up the track with just
over a lap to go. They kept a keen eye especially on the two
newcomers to see who would be the first to begin to sprint. It was
S Ware and Dylan Starkey who fought it out for line honours with
Starkey's wheel in front as they crossed the line while Jai Sutton
was third and Gloede fourth.
Kelvin Rohrlach put in a strong ride in
the senior C grade 12 lap, and chose to use his turn at the front
with two laps to go to make a break. Peter Werner tried to chase
him down, but Rohrlach's advantage was too great, keeping the lead
to be first over the line from Werner, Sam Campbell, Keith Gibbons
and Darryl Fulton.
Jessica Shore tried to break away from Charlotte Wakeling and Jacob
Hughes just over a lap from the end of the junior A grade eight lap,
but the other two responded immediately. Hughes took the lead with
Wakeling alongside him as they came around the last bend, but he
couldn't hold her off as she powered down the straight to be first
home followed by Hughes and Shore.
Connor Margaritis and Justin Burke had a 15m break on Bailey Kesby
and Corey Gibbons, as they got the bell in the junior B grade six
lap, with Kesby and Gibbons unable to reel them in. In an extremely
close finish it was Connor whose wheel was slightly in front as they
crossed the line with C Gibbons third and Kesby fourth.
Mini riders Holly Farrell, Sebastian Hubner and Chris and Leroy
Risborg split in two groups for their one lap handicap races and
showed much enthusiasm in their quest to be first to cross the line.
Chris Margaritis was the only 24 inch bike rider and was given the
challenge to chase down Leroy and Holly in the first race and
succeeded
