Young Attacks Early
27.12.09
Senior
A Grade opened Friday nights racing at the Velodrome with a 15 lap
heart starter setting a fast and constant speed from the start with
Ben Young attacking after just two laps to gain a 10 metre lead.
Rhyse Carpenter and Tim Fulton worked together to bridge the gap in
the next two and a half laps and once they joined Young the pace
slowed slightly giving Darren Anderson, Ryan Ware and Dylan Starkey
the chance to get onto the back. This was to be short lived as
Fulton made his attack a lap and a half later gaining a break but
was reeled in and again the pace slowed slightly. Young used
this change in pace to attack again but Fulton was ready and was
able to go with him.
Carpenter and Anderson chased after them leaving Starkey and Ware
the tough job to reel in both of the groups in front of them which
they managed to do three and a half laps later. With just over
two laps from the finish the pace slowed with riders watching each
other to see who would make the first move and it was Ware who got
the jump on the rest as they got the bell.
The lead changed several times during the sprint for the line but it
was Fulton who narrowly took out the event from Carpenter, Young,
Ware, Starkey and Anderson.
Paul Waring, in his first race on the track, and Jemilly Kade, who
made a return after several years absence, joined the combined
Senior B and C Grade side for the night. In their 12 lap heart
starter the riders stayed together for the whole race with Sam
Campbell in the lead as they got the bell and using this position to
begin his sprint for the finish. Peter Werner and Keith
Gibbons jumped on his wheel and the rest of the group followed and
although he tried to hold them off he wasn’t quite strong enough.
It was Gibbons who crossed the line first ahead of Werner, Nicole
Goldring, Campbell, Kade, Darryl Fulton and Waring.
Jacob Hughes growing confidence on the track, awareness of the
position of the other riders around him and an alertness to the
opportunity to gain an advantage showed in the Junior A Grade 8 lap
scratch race. The four riders bunched up, two a breast, as
they got the last lap bell and began the sprint for the finish.
Hughes , who was at the back noticed a gap between the two front
riders and used it to take the lead. Charlotte Wakeling
responded immediately and was able to come around him as they came
down the home straight but Hughes didn’t give up and gave it his all
right to the line. Charlotte was too strong and won the event
from Hughes, Liza Wakeling and Jessica Shore.
The handicapper was spot on in the Junior B Grade 2 lap handicap as
the four riders had just come together as they came down the
straight to the line. Bailey Kesby (70m) put in a good ride
from the lead position trying to hold off the other riders and
looked like he may succeed but the others were closing the gap to
him. Dana Prater (10m) was first followed by Connor Margaritis
(0m), Corey Gibbons (30m), and Kesby (70m).
Leyton Gould, on his first night of racing, showed that he will be
one to watch in the 24” bikes category in the coming weeks. He
was up against a more experienced Chris Margaritis and in their 3
lap scratch race when Margaritis took off on the bell gaining a
good break on Gould. Gould began chasing him down and slowly
began to reel him in and although Margaritis was first to the line
Gould didn’t stop trying to catch him until the finish.
Minis, Sebastian Hubner, Braden McLeod, Jasmine Ledington, and Cody
Risborg showed increasing confidence with their manoeuvres when
overtaking each other and shared in winning each event.
New rider Hudson Barsby was given the challenge to reel in Mini
riders Leroy Risborg and Holly Farrell who were handicapped at
least 25 metres ahead of him with each having a win over the
evening.
