Strong Competitive Races at the
Velodrome
15.01.10
Friday
night saw the third round of the McLeods Point series. With
the first event of the Club Track Championships being held in two
weeks time there was some fierce competition across all grades.
Senior numbers were slightly down as some riders were competing in
Adelaide and gearing up for the support races of the Tour Down
Under. Sam Campbell put in a strong effort all evening showing
a marked improvement over the season so far.
The three senior grades combined for many of the races and C-grader
Campbell's improved race fitness and strong, positive mental
attitude saw him able to match the faster pace set by the riders of
the other two grades even with his restricted gearing. D
Darren Anderson used his position at the back of the group with two
laps to go of the Senior A grade 15 lap scratch race to move high up
on the bank and gain maximum advantage of his sprint down the slope
and past the other riders to take the lead and catch the others by
surprise. His brother Daniel was the first to respond and
slowly reeled Darren in. Instead of working with him he went
straight past to cross the line a good 15 metres ahead of Darren who
was followed by Ben Young and Dylan Starkey.
Kelvin Rohrlach threw down the challenge to other B grade riders
Peter Werner, Adrian Wilson and Wesley Fisher as they bunched
together to begin the final lap of the combined B and C Grade 12 lap
scratch race. In a powerful Sprint he pulled away from
the others to have a 10m advantage as he crossed the line followed
by Werner, Wilson, Fisher and Campbell.
Jessica
Shore,
Liza Wakeling and Charlotte Wakeling were together as they began the
final lap of the junior A grade 10 lap scratch race. But C
Wakeling made her move and had pulled away from the other two by
almost 10 metres when Liza chased her down to take the lead. C
Wakeling wasn't going to give in and vainly tried to hold on making
it an exciting finish with half a wheel separating them on the line
with L Wakeling first from C Wakeling and Shore.

In the junior B grade four lap scratch race Connor Margaritis took
off half way through splitting the field as Dana Prater tried to
reel him and Bailey Kesby couldn't match her pace. Margaritis
had a 20m lead as he got the final lap bell and he worked hard to
maintain that distance with Prater only closing the gap by 5m before
the line and Kesby third.
The riders in the 24" bikes grade rode a sedate pace taking turns
for the first three laps of their four lap race but as soon as they
got the bell Chris Margaritis began his sprint for the line with the
others strung out behind him. Leyton Gould in third position
made his move along the back straight quickly reeling in Holly
Farrell to be in second place as they headed for the line.
Chris was first to the line followed by Gould, Farrell and Hudson
Barsby.
Scott Litchfield and Leroy Risborg were pitted against each other in
a series of handicap races and joined in the team events with the
other juniors.
