A grade cyclists Paul Berkett and Malcolm Clasohm competed in the
Classic Adelaide Veterans Series (CAVS) in January. Cyclists
competed from all parts of Australia as well as internationally.
The first of five events in the CAV series, was the 300m Straight
line sprint held at Regency Park circuit. Clasohm was first in
his age division and Berkett came second in his age division.
A few hours later, they competed in the criterium, with Berkett
placed fourth after just avoiding a high speed crash in the sprint
finish, and Clasohm finished well in a talented field of riders.
The third event of the series was the 6km time trial hill climb on
the old Mount Barker road (Eagle on the hill). Berkett
finished seventh in his grade and twenty-fifth out of 82
competitors. Clasohm didn't compete in this event.
Next up event four, the 54km road race at Gumeracha in the Adelaide
Hills, with riders from Victoria and NSW out numbering SA riders.
Berkett and a local Adelaide rider Pas Russo got a break from the
main group, working together well to gain a 15 second gap at the
half way mark (27km). Both worked hard to hold off the main
bunch to the finish 35 seconds ahead of the main field.
Berkett claimed second place, while Clasohm came third in a fast
tight bunch sprint.
The last event five of the series was a 25km Time Trial at Willunga
along the range road. Clasohm had a good ride claiming third
place in his age division with a time of 41min 30 seconds, and
placed sixteenth outright from 62 competitors. Berkett could
only manage a fifth placing in his age division with a time of 41min
and 19 seconds and placed thirteenth outright of 62 competitors.

Berkett also competed in two open B grade criterium events in the
same week, the first one a very tight circuit at Mawson Lakes, with
a hard fast bunch sprint. Berkett claimed third in the the
second event at Norwood Parade where A and B grade were combined,
which was a tough race with Berkett hanging on for eighth.
Also at the Mawson Lakes criterium, an up and coming junior cyclist
Jai Sutton raced well in a tough field of talented riders in the
junior B grade criterium event claiming a well deserved third
placing.
