Cyclists eluded the showers although the roads were wet in the race along Cowell Road on Saturday afternoon.  Juniors started their 14 kilometre handicap race out on Cowell Road and raced back in towards Whyalla turning onto the Jenkins Avenue extension, finishing at Jubilee Park.

Scratch rider Jacob Hughes, who started at 11.5 minutes, had his work cut out to reel in Dana Prater at 7.5 minutes and Lleyton Gould at 0 minutes over the distance. Although Hughes put in a strong ride, had only made up half of the four minute gap to Prater by the finish.  Gould, who is growing in confidence each week, held off the other two riders to have a convincing win.  Prater came second and Hughes third, also having the fastest time.

Hayden Gill, who was first off, was the only single rider in the senior 51.6 kilometre handicap race, while the other groups had at least three riders, so did not have the advantage of sharing the workload like group riders.  The race started at the velodrome on McBryde Terrace, travelling along Norrie Avenue, Jenkins Avenue, Cowell Road to the Iron Baron turn off and return to Whyalla via Broadbent Terrace, Darling Terrace, Whitehead Street and McBryde Terrace to finish just before Wilson Park.  Peter Werner, Sam Campbell, Ross Campbell, Bob Monaghan, Alison Ward and Nicole Goldring who started 15 minutes behind Gill, made up three minutes by the turn onto the Cowell Road from the Jenkins Avenue extension.  Ron Versteegh, Dylan Starkey, Steve Brown and Adrian Wilson made up one minute to the group in front turning onto the Cowell road, while the remaining two groups made up no time.

Scratch rider Ben Young suffered a puncture just before the start, but was able to borrow a wheel.  However he had trouble with his gears from the start and retired as his group turned onto Norrie Avenue from McBryde Terrace.  This meant that Rhyse Carpenter and Paul Berkett would have to work even harder to close the gap to Graeme Fargher, Ryan Ware, Kelvin Rohrlach and Wil Symons, then set about reeling in the rest of the field.  The climb up the falls often sees the groups split, but only the scratch riders separated this week.

Gill held the lead until 200 metres from the turn around, when he was caught by the group behind and was able to get on the back as they passed and work with them. Fargher, Ware, Rohrlach, and Symons only made up one of the four minutes to the group in front of them at the turn around, while Berkett was steadily reeling in this group.  Goldring, Ward, Monaghan, R Campbell, S Campbell and Werner were joined by Wilson, Brown, Versteegh and Starkey at the Go-kart Club, making a formidable bunch of 10 who set about working to hold off the two groups behind them.  It was this group who was in the lead rounding the bend into the finish straight, with riders vying for the best position before the sprint and waiting to see who would make the first move. It was a bunch finish with Starkey slightly in front approaching the line holding on to be first, narrowly from Versteegh, Wilson, S Campbell, R Campbell and Ward, while Berkett finished in the fastest time
